Apple MagSafe Charger (MHXH3AM/A) — Editorial Review & Compatibility Guide

The Apple MagSafe Charger (MHXH3AM/A) is Apple's magnetic wireless charging puck for iPhone 12 and later — snaps magnetically to the back of MagSafe-equipped iPhones for aligned wireless charging up to 15W. Per Apple's official MagSafe Charger product page, the puck delivers up to 15W to iPhone 12-16 (with a 20W+ USB-C power adapter), 7.5W Qi charging to older iPhones (8 and later) + non-MagSafe Qi devices, and includes a built-in USB-C cable. The magnetic alignment array ensures the charging coils line up perfectly every time — solving the misalignment problem of flat Qi pads.

What the MagSafe Charger Specifically Wins

  • Perfect magnetic alignment — snaps to the exact charging-coil position. No "woke up to a dead phone because it shifted off the Qi pad" problem
  • Up to 15W to iPhone 12-16 — 2x the 7.5W of standard Qi pads (requires a 20W+ USB-C PD power adapter — sold separately)
  • Works as a standard Qi charger too — 7.5W to iPhone 8+ + AirPods (Wireless Charging case) + other Qi devices (no magnet alignment on non-MagSafe devices)
  • Built-in USB-C cable — plugs into any USB-C PD power adapter or USB-C port
  • Compact + portable — small puck fits in a pocket / bag for travel charging
  • Attaches through thin cases — works through MagSafe-compatible cases + thin non-MagSafe cases (thick cases reduce magnet strength / charging)
  • Doubles as a magnetic mount — holds the iPhone for video viewing while charging
  • Apple-genuine MagSafe certification — guaranteed 15W (third-party MagSafe-compatible chargers were capped at 7.5W until the Qi2 standard)
  • Charges AirPods Pro / AirPods 3 MagSafe case (snaps to the case)

Where the MagSafe Charger Specifically Fits

  • iPhone 12-16 owners wanting fast, aligned wireless charging
  • Nightstand charging — snap on before bed, perfect alignment guaranteed
  • Desk charging — charge + use phone propped up
  • Travel wireless charging — compact puck + USB-C cable
  • AirPods Pro / AirPods 3 MagSafe case charging
  • Car mount charging (with a MagSafe car mount)
  • Office desk secondary charger
  • Backup / spare charger for MagSafe iPhone users
  • Hotel / Airbnb travel charging with any USB-C adapter
  • Charging through thin MagSafe cases without removing the case

Honest Limits Buyers Should Know

  • Power adapter NOT included. The MagSafe Charger ships with the USB-C cable + puck only. For 15W you need a 20W+ USB-C PD adapter (Apple 20W USB-C Power Adapter ~$19, or any USB-C PD adapter) — see [[pdp-apple-20w-usb-c-power-adapter-review]]. Without an adequate adapter, charging is slower
  • 15W only on iPhone 12-16; 7.5W on everything else. Older iPhones (8-11) + Android Qi devices charge at 7.5W max via this puck. Full 15W is MagSafe-iPhone-only
  • Slower than wired charging. Wireless 15W is slower than wired USB-C PD (iPhone 15+ can do ~27W wired). For fastest charging, use a USB-C cable directly
  • Generates heat — some charging throttling. Wireless charging is less efficient than wired; the puck + phone get warm. In hot environments charging may throttle to protect the battery
  • Thick cases reduce / block charging. Cases over ~2mm or with metal / magnetic elements (non-MagSafe) weaken the magnet + may stop charging. Use MagSafe-certified cases for best results
  • Not a stand — phone lies at the puck's angle. For an upright charging stand, look at MagSafe Duo or third-party MagSafe stands (Belkin, ESR, Anker)
  • Built-in cable is ~1m and non-detachable. Cable failure = replacing the whole charger
  • iPhone 16 + Qi2 third-party chargers now also do 15W. Since Qi2 (2023), third-party Qi2 chargers (Anker, Belkin) match MagSafe's 15W at lower cost. Apple-genuine premium is less compelling than it was
  • Apple premium pricing. ~$39 vs Qi2 third-party (~$25-30). Premium pays for Apple-genuine + guaranteed compatibility
  • Magnet can attract metal debris (keys, coins) in a bag — keep clean

Where Buyers Should Look Elsewhere

  • Cheaper Qi2 15W magnetic charger → Anker MagGo, Belkin BoostCharge Pro Qi2 (match 15W at lower cost)
  • Charging stand (upright) → Belkin BoostCharge Pro 2-in-1 / 3-in-1, Apple-compatible MagSafe stands
  • Multi-device (iPhone + Watch + AirPods) → Belkin 3-in-1 MagSafe, Anker 3-in-1 Cube
  • Apple Watch + iPhone combo → Apple MagSafe Duo Charger (folds for travel)
  • Fastest charging → wired USB-C cable + USB-C PD adapter (faster than any wireless)
  • Power bank with MagSafe → Anker MagGo power bank, Apple MagSafe Battery Pack
  • Android Qi charging → standard Qi pad (no MagSafe magnets needed)
  • Car charging → Belkin / iOttie MagSafe car mount + charger
