What Does M.2 Mean? The Slot, Not the Drive

M.2 is a physical connector standard for motherboards, not a storage protocol — it defines a slot’s shape, length, and pin layout, and nothing more. An M.2 slot can carry either a SATA SSD or an NVMe SSD, and the two are not interchangeable. The card’s length code and notch pattern (its "key") tell you which is which.

A Slot Standard, Not a Speed Standard

Before M.2 (originally called NGFF, Next Generation Form Factor), internal SSDs were mostly 2.5-inch drives connected by a SATA data cable and a separate power cable — the same physical format as a laptop hard drive. M.2 replaced that with a small card, roughly the size of a stick of gum, that plugs directly into a slot on the motherboard and is held in place by a single screw. No cables, no separate power connector.

What M.2 does not specify is how the drive talks to the rest of the system. A given M.2 slot can be wired for the older SATA protocol, the newer NVMe-over-PCIe protocol, or in some cases both — and a given M.2 card can implement either one. The connector looks nearly identical either way, which is exactly why "M.2" alone is not a useful spec on its own. Reading the Length Code

Every M.2 card is stamped with a four- or five-digit length code that gives its size in millimeters directly: the first two digits are width, the remaining digits are length.

  • 2230 — 22 mm wide, 30 mm long. Common in thin laptops and handheld gaming PCs.
  • 2242 — 22 × 42 mm. Some laptops and small-form-factor boards.
  • 2260 — 22 × 60 mm. Less common; occasionally used where a full 2280 card does not physically fit.
  • 2280 — 22 × 80 mm. The default for desktop motherboards and the large majority of retail SSDs — the length a dedicated cooler like the Thermaltake MS-1 M.2 heatsink is sized specifically to cover.
  • 22110 — 22 × 110 mm. Mostly enterprise and workstation drives that need extra room for flash and a larger controller.

Keying: Why the Notch Position Matters

Look at the gold contact edge of an M.2 card and there will be one or two small gaps, or notches, breaking up the row of pins. Their position is the "key," and it determines what the card can plug into:

  • M-key — one notch, positioned toward the right side of the edge. Used by NVMe (PCIe) SSDs, and by some SATA M.2 drives.
  • B-key — one notch, positioned toward the left side of the edge. Mostly seen on Wi-Fi and cellular cards, and on some legacy SATA modules; rare on modern SSDs.
  • B+M-key — two notches, one at each position above. The common configuration for SATA M.2 SSDs, such as the Crucial MX500 1TB SATA M.2 — the second notch lets the card fit into either a B-key or an M-key slot.

The key ridge inside the slot physically blocks a mismatched card from seating — a B+M-key SATA drive fits an M-key slot, but a pure M-key NVMe drive cannot be forced into a B-key-only slot. If a card does not seat, mismatched keying is the first thing to check, well before assuming the slot itself is faulty.

SATA and NVMe Can Share the Same Slot Shape

This is the part that trips up the most buyers: keying tells you what fits, not what protocol the slot or drive actually uses. An M-key slot on a motherboard is often wired for NVMe only, but some boards — check the manual — support both SATA and NVMe on the same M-key slot, auto-detecting which type of card is installed. A B+M-key SATA drive like the Crucial MX500 M.2 physically fits an M-key NVMe-only slot but will not be detected, because that slot simply is not wired to speak SATA.

Two consequences follow from this:

  • Buying "an M.2 SSD" without checking whether it is SATA or NVMe is the single most common M.2 shopping mistake — a budget NVMe drive like the Western Digital 256GB M.2 NVMe Gen4 and a SATA M.2 drive of the same length can look nearly identical in a product photo.
  • On some boards, populating a secondary M.2 slot disables one or more SATA ports, because the slot’s lanes are shared with the chipset’s SATA controller. This is a per-motherboard wiring decision, not a universal rule — always check the manual before assuming a free slot is truly free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put a SATA M.2 drive in an NVMe M.2 slot?

Only if the keying matches (most SATA M.2 drives are B+M-key, which physically fits an M-key slot) — but fitting and working are different things. If the slot is wired NVMe-only, a SATA card will seat but never be detected. Check the motherboard manual for which protocol each M.2 slot actually supports.

Does a longer M.2 card mean a faster drive?

No. Length (2230, 2242, 2280, and so on) is purely physical — it relates to how much flash and controller area fits on the card, which loosely correlates with capacity, not directly with speed. A 2280 SATA drive is not faster than a 2242 NVMe drive.
