Overview

The Blackmagic Design ATEM Television Studio HD8 reimagines what a portable live production switcher can be by integrating a full broadcast control panel, 8 standards-converted 3G-SDI inputs, a Fairlight audio mixer, hardware streaming, and recording capabilities into a single unit. This all-in-one approach means a production team can walk into a small venue, conference room, or house of worship and set up a professional multi-camera broadcast without racks of equipment, external control surfaces, or dedicated streaming computers. Each of the 8 SDI inputs includes standards conversion, so cameras and playback devices running at different frame rates or resolutions are automatically matched to the project format — a feature that eliminates one of the most common sources of live production headaches.

The production capabilities go deep despite the portable form factor. Four upstream chroma keyers and two downstream keyers allow complex layered compositions, while SuperSource provides picture-in-picture and multi-box layouts. The built-in Fairlight audio mixer covers all SDI input channels plus dedicated channels for XLR, RCA, and MADI connections, with each channel offering 6-band parametric EQ, dynamics processing, and level controls. MADI support is particularly notable, enabling connection to larger audio ecosystems when needed. The 16-way multiview output is available via both SDI and HDMI, and talkback functionality is built in for communication with camera operators. With Blackmagic Cloud integration and optional internal network shared storage, the HD8 can also serve as the hub for collaborative post-production workflows immediately after a live event wraps.

Key Features

PORTABLE ALL-IN-ONE STUDIO: The new ATEM Television Studio HD8 is a professional live production switcher built into a broadcast control panel so it can be used for high end work while being extremely portable. This means you can use it in small venues that don't have the access for equipment racks or broadcast vans.

FEATURE RICH: 8 standards converted 3G-SDI inputs, 2 Aux outputs, Reference inputs and outputs, MADI inputs and outputs, 4 chroma keyers, 2 downstream keyers, SuperSource, 2 media players and lots of transitions.

ADVANCED CAPABILITIES: ATEM Television Studio HD8 includes a whole television studio of features such as hardware streaming, recording, audio mixer, talkback, 16-way Multiview via SDI or HDMI, and optional internal network shared storage.

BUILT IN AUDIO MIXER: With a built in Fairlight audio mixer, ATEM Television Studio HD makes it possible to do complex live sound mixing. The internal mixer features enough channels for all SDI inputs, as well as extra channels for the XLR, RCA and MADI inputs! Each input channel features the highest quality 6 band parametric EQ, compressor, limiter, expander and noise gate as well as level and pan controls.

Pros & Cons

👍 Pros

  • All-in-one design integrates a broadcast control panel directly into the switcher, eliminating the need for a separate control surface.
  • Standards conversion on all 8 SDI inputs means sources with different formats can be mixed without external converters.
  • Built-in Fairlight audio mixer with professional processing eliminates the need for a separate audio console in many productions.
  • Hardware-based streaming and recording to USB and M.2 reduces reliance on external computers for content delivery.
  • Portable form factor allows professional-quality live production in venues without space for equipment racks.

👎 Cons

  • Limited to 1080p60 maximum resolution with no 4K or UHD support.
  • SDI-only inputs mean HDMI sources require an external HDMI-to-SDI converter.
  • The integrated control panel, while portable, offers less surface area and customization than a full-size external panel.
  • The unit's combined switcher-and-panel design means a hardware failure could affect both functions simultaneously.
