B+W 486M 46mm Basic UV/IR Cut MRC Filter

The B+W 486M is a 46mm UV/IR cut filter built from optical glass set in a brass ring mount, designed to block both ultraviolet and infrared wavelengths from reaching your camera's sensor. Digital imaging sensors are inherently sensitive to light beyond the visible spectrum, and while most cameras include an internal IR-cut filter, residual UV and IR transmission can still produce subtle color shifts and reduced contrast — particularly in bright outdoor conditions or when shooting at longer focal lengths through atmospheric haze. The 486M addresses this by filtering out both ends of the non-visible spectrum, helping to maintain accurate color reproduction and contrast straight out of the camera.

The multi-resistant coating is a key feature that serves double duty: it suppresses internal reflections that cause flare and ghosting, and it creates a surface that repels water, oil, and dust for easier field cleaning. The brass ring mount is a deliberate choice over lighter aluminum — brass threads more smoothly into lens filter rings, resists cross-threading, and is less likely to jam or bind from temperature changes. The black knurled edge gives a positive grip when installing or removing the filter, even with cold or wet hands.
