Overview

The Datacolor SpyderCube is a physical reference tool designed to give photographers all the information they need to achieve accurate color, proper exposure, and correct black and white points in RAW processing. Unlike flat gray cards that only capture light from one direction, the SpyderCube's three-dimensional cube shape presents white faces, spectrally neutral 18% gray faces, and a black face to the camera simultaneously, each reflecting the scene's lighting from different angles. A chrome ball on top captures specular highlights and a recessed black trap on the front provides an absolute black reference unaffected by ambient light bounce.

In practice, the SpyderCube is placed in the scene for a single reference shot at the start of each lighting setup. That reference image is then used in any RAW converter to quickly set white balance from the white or gray faces, evaluate exposure using the 18% gray, and establish true black and white points. Because corrections are derived from a physical, spectrally neutral standard, they can be batch-applied to every image shot under the same lighting conditions, saving significant time in post-production while maintaining color accuracy across an entire shoot.

Pros & Cons

👍 Pros

  • Three-dimensional design captures highlight, shadow, and midtone references from multiple lighting angles in one shot.
  • Recessed black trap provides a true absolute black reference that flat calibration cards cannot offer.
  • Spectrally neutral 18% gray faces give a reliable midtone reference for accurate exposure evaluation.
  • Small, lightweight cube attaches to a lanyard or tripod and is easy to carry on location.

👎 Cons

  • Does not include a software component, so all corrections must be applied manually in your RAW editor.
  • The chrome ball can produce glare that may be distracting if accidentally included in final compositions.
  • Only useful for RAW shooters — JPEG-only workflows gain limited benefit since in-camera processing has already been applied.
  • Small size can make it hard to isolate the reference faces when shooting wide-angle scenes from a distance.
