Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 3rd Gen — Editorial Review

Eight Air-mode preamps and full-band I/O
MusicRadar and Focusrite note the unit carries eight 3rd-gen Scarlett mic preamps with a switchable Air mode that emulates Focusrite's ISA transformer voicing, a pad on every preamp for hot sources, and up to 24-bit/192 kHz conversion with improved dynamic range and lower noise over the prior generation. Ten balanced line outputs with Anti-Thump speaker switching plus two independently-levelled headphone outs cover monitoring and cue mixes, and ADAT in/out expands the preamp count further. In Julian Krause's measurement-focused review and test — featured above — it's bench-tested for real-world audio performance rather than spec-sheet claims.
Honest cons
- It's a 1U rack box. Far less portable than the desktop Scarletts — it wants a rack or a deep shelf.
- No onboard DSP or mixer effects. Routing is flexible via Focusrite Control, but there's no built-in compression/EQ like creator-focused interfaces.
- USB, not Thunderbolt. Fine for tracking, but round-trip latency at high channel counts trails Thunderbolt rivals.
- Eight pres is the ceiling without expansion. Going beyond a typical drum-plus-room setup means adding an ADAT preamp.
Where this interface fits
- Project and band studios needing to track drums plus a full band simultaneously.
- Engineers who value clean, well-measured preamps with the Air option for vocals and guitars.
- Rooms with a rack and outboard gear to patch through the line I/O.
- Not a grab-and-go mobile rig, an all-in-one streaming box, or a lowest-latency Thunderbolt setup.
