Many digital sensors — particularly modified, specialty, or older CCD units — use minimal or no internal UV/IR cut filtering to maximize sensitivity. Even sensors with standard filter stacks can exhibit residual IR contamination that shifts skin tones toward red or causes foliage to render incorrectly. The Hoya UV/IR Cut addresses both the below-390nm UV range and the above-700nm IR range in a single filter.
A standard UV filter only blocks ultraviolet wavelengths below approximately 390nm. The UV/IR Cut additionally blocks infrared wavelengths above 700nm — the part of the spectrum that digital sensors are often more sensitive to than human eyes. For shooting in bright sunlight or with high-color-accuracy requirements, the IR cut component is the more meaningful correction.
In most shooting conditions, the filter is neutral in its effect on visible light — its purpose is to remove invisible wavelengths rather than modify visible ones. Some shooters using the filter with high IR-sensitive sensors may notice slightly cooler, more accurate color rendition compared to shooting without it. Exposure compensation is generally not required for normal outdoor photography.
Hoya's multi-coating reduces surface reflections at the glass interfaces, which directly lowers the probability of flare streaks and ghost images in scenes with strong light sources — shooting toward windows, stage lighting, or sunlit surfaces. It won't eliminate all flare under extreme backlit conditions, but it substantially reduces the artifacts that uncoated or single-coated glass would produce.
