Leica SL2 — Editorial Review
The Leica SL2 is a 47.3-megapixel full-frame mirrorless camera built into an uncompromising, hand-assembled machined-aluminum body. It is unapologetically a luxury tool, and the reviews bear that out: after a day of shooting, PetaPixel titled its impressions "Worth Every Penny and More."

Built like nothing else, shoots like a Leica
The draw is the combination of a high-resolution sensor, in-body image stabilization, and an enormous, ultra-high-resolution electronic viewfinder inside a weather-sealed body that feels engineered rather than assembled. The Phoblographer dubbed it "the camera for the photographer that prints," praising the build and the image quality its 47-megapixel sensor delivers for large prints, including the rendering the SL2 pulls from both modern L-mount glass and adapted vintage lenses. In Hugh Brownstone's "Leica SL2 in 2024" review — featured above — he weighs whether that experience still justifies the price years after launch.
Honest cons
- The price. The SL2 sits at the very top of the full-frame market, well above comparably-specced rivals.
- Contrast-detect autofocus. The SL2 lacks on-sensor phase detection, so AF tracking is less tenacious than competing cameras for fast action and erratic subjects.
- Fixed rear screen. The high-res LCD does not articulate, which limits awkward-angle and vlogging-style framing.
- Size and weight. The all-metal body is notably heavier than plastic-composite full-frame bodies.
Where this camera fits
- Deliberate photographers who shoot landscapes, portraits, studio, and street and value image rendering and build over speed.
- L-mount owners who can draw on the Leica/Sigma/Panasonic alliance lens lineup.
- Photographers adapting vintage glass who want IBIS and a class-leading EVF behind it.
- Not sports and wildlife shooters who need sticky tracking AF, vloggers who need a flip screen, or anyone weight- or budget-constrained.
