Frequently Asked Questions
Does the VideoMic GO require batteries or phantom power?
No. The VideoMic GO is powered directly by your camera's 3.5mm mic input — no batteries, no charging, no phantom power needed. Just plug it in and start recording.
What cameras is this compatible with?
The VideoMic GO connects via a standard 3.5mm TRS output and mounts on any camera with a hot shoe and 3.5mm mic input. It's also compatible with smartphones using a TRRS adapter (sold separately).
How does this compare to a camera's built-in microphone?
Significantly better. The VideoMic GO's directional pickup pattern captures focused audio from in front of the camera while rejecting side and rear noise, which built-in mics cannot do.
Is the VideoMic GO good for outdoor recording?
It works outdoors, though wind noise can be an issue. Rode includes a foam windscreen, and for windy conditions the optional Rode DeadCat GO furry windshield is recommended.
Does this record in stereo or mono?
The VideoMic GO is a mono microphone with a directional (supercardioid) pickup pattern. For stereo recording, you'd need a stereo mic like the Rode VideoMic Stereo or Rode Stereo VideoMic X.
