Overview

The Solid State Logic Fusion (729740X2) is an all-analog stereo outboard processor designed to sit across your mix bus or stereo stems, providing five discrete coloration tools in a single 2U rackmount chassis. The Violet EQ offers gentle two-band shelving with minimal phase shift for broad tonal shaping. The Vintage Drive circuit introduces non-linear harmonic saturation that can range from subtle warmth to more audible analog grit. The HF Compressor provides frequency-selective compression that smooths and rounds harsh high frequencies without dulling the overall mix. A custom-wound SSL Transformer circuit adds low-frequency saturation and characteristic high-frequency phase shift reminiscent of classic console designs. Finally, the Stereo Image section lets you widen or narrow the stereo field to place your mix precisely in the soundstage.

What sets the Fusion apart from simpler summing or coloration boxes is its flexible insert loop. In stereo mode, you can patch in additional stereo processors like the SSL Bus Compressor either before or after the Violet EQ. Switch to mid/side mode, and you can insert two different mono processors independently across the mid and side components of your mix, opening up creative possibilities that would otherwise require a dedicated M/S matrix. The SuperAnalogue signal path features center-detented ±12dB input and output trim controls for meticulous gain staging, while the master meter with 3-second peak hold gives you clear visual feedback. Every processing section can be individually bypassed, and adjustable front-panel brightness lets you tailor the unit's appearance to your working environment.

Key Features

Stereo mode allows you to integrate additional outboard gear such as the SSL Bus Compressor. Switchable pre/post the VIOLET EQ.

Mid/Side mode allows you to insert two different mono outboard processors across the mid and side signals of the mix. Switchable pre/post the STEREO IMAGE controls.

SuperAnalogue ±12dB centre-indented INPUT and OUTPUT trim controls to help achieve the best possible gain-staging into and out of Fusion.

Master meter, with 3-second peak hold segments. Switches from output to input metering upon pressing the BYPASS switch.

Adjustable front-panel meter and switch brightness to match the vibe of your studio environment.

  • Five distinct analog processing sections offer a wide range of tonal shaping in a single unit
  • SuperAnalogue circuit design with dedicated input and output trim controls ensures precise gain staging
  • Mid/side insert mode enables creative processing with external mono outboard gear
  • Individual bypass on every section makes it easy to audition each processor's contribution
  • Adjustable front-panel meter and switch brightness lets you match the unit to your studio lighting

👎 Cons

  • Premium price point puts it out of reach for many home studio budgets
  • 2U rackmount form factor requires dedicated rack space and is not portable
  • Does not include a built-in bus compressor despite being an SSL mix bus product
  • No digital recall or preset storage means settings must be noted manually between sessions

Frequently Asked Questions

The Fusion includes a Violet EQ (two-band shelving), Vintage Drive (harmonic saturation), an HF Compressor (high-frequency rounding), a custom SSL Transformer circuit (low-end warmth and HF phase-shift), and Stereo Image width control.
Yes, the Fusion has a stereo insert loop that can operate in stereo mode for processors like the SSL Bus Compressor, or in mid/side mode for inserting two separate mono processors across the mid and side signals.
It is an entirely analog signal path with no digital conversion. All processing is done in the analog domain using SSL's SuperAnalogue design.
It is most commonly placed across the stereo mix bus as the final analog processing stage before your converter or recording device, though it can also be used on stereo stems or subgroups.
Yes, each of the five processing sections has individual bypass, and there is a master bypass that also switches the meters from output to input so you can compare processed and unprocessed signals.
