Sony ECMXYST1M Stereo Microphone for Camcorders

The Sony ECMXYST1M is an on-camera stereo microphone designed to extend the audio capability of Sony's Handycam, Cyber-shot, and Alpha series cameras beyond their built-in mics. Its defining feature is a user-adjustable directional angle: switch between 0° for tight, forward-focused pickup — effective for interviews, subject-close narration, or run-and-gun acquisition where you're controlling the sound source — and 120° for a wider stereo field that captures environmental context, room tone, and spatial information. For a camera-mounted mic, that range of adjustment is meaningfully different from a fixed-pattern on-camera mic, allowing one piece of hardware to serve multiple shooting scenarios.

The mic attaches via Sony's Multi Interface Shoe for a seamless physical and electrical connection on compatible bodies, or connects via the supplied cable to any camera with a 3.5mm stereo mic input. It draws power from the camera, eliminating the need for batteries or external phantom power. The included windscreen, carrying pouch, and connector cap reflect a practical kit designed for location shooting rather than studio-only use. The caveat inherent to any on-camera microphone applies here: the signal chain is only as quiet as the camera's onboard preamp. The ECMXYST1M will capture stereo field with solid character, but users with preamp-noisy camera bodies should address gain staging at the camera level to get the most from it.
