Key Features

Our most advance lens technology comes together in a compact, lightweight 70-200mm F4 telephoto zoom G Lens that delivers outstanding optical and AF performance as well as half-macro capability through the zoom range.

Excellent corner-to-corner resolution and contrast throughout the zoom ranger are achieved by combining AA (advance aspherical) and aspherical lens elements. Three ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) elements and one Super ED element suppress chromatic aberration and color bleeding fore revealing sharpness. Exquisite full-frame bokeh is enhanced by a circular 9-blade aperture mechanism and optimized spherical aberration.

Eye-opening close-up performance, being the first in its class to offer half-macro capability throughout the zoom range.

The FE 70-200mm F4 Macro G OSS II is fully compatible with Sony’s 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters, in addition to increasing maximum focal length, the 2.0x teleconverter make it possible to shoot life-size 1:1 macro at all focal lengths for new creative potential.

Four of Sony’s original high-thrust XD linear motors work in conjunction with precision floating focus groups to achieve extremely fast, accurate focus drive.

Pros & Cons

👍 Pros

  • Delivers half-macro capability throughout the entire zoom range, a class-first feature enhancing close-up versatility.
  • Achieves excellent corner-to-corner resolution and contrast with advanced aspherical, ED, and Super ED elements.
  • Features four high-thrust XD linear motors for extremely fast, accurate, and responsive autofocus performance.
  • Fully compatible with Sony's 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters, allowing for 1:1 macro at all focal lengths with the 2.0x.
  • Produces exquisite full-frame bokeh thanks to a circular 9-blade aperture and optimized spherical aberration.

👎 Cons

  • The F4 constant maximum aperture is less bright than F2.8 options, potentially impacting low-light performance and shutter speeds.
  • Achieving true 1:1 life-size macro requires the separate purchase and use of a 2.0x teleconverter, adding to the overall cost.
  • Despite being compact and lightweight for its class, a 70-200mm telephoto zoom can still be substantial to carry for extended periods.
  • The "half-macro capability" natively means it does not achieve true 1:1 macro without an additional teleconverter.
  • While offering advanced technology, the cost of this G Lens with its features is likely at a premium tier.
