Tiffen 49LC3 49mm Low Contrast Filter

The Tiffen 49LC3 is a 49mm Low Contrast 3 filter designed to reduce the contrast ratio in high-dynamic-range scenes by generating controlled localized flare near highlight areas. This pulls down the brightness of specular highlights while simultaneously lifting shadow detail, resulting in a more balanced, visually even image. It is particularly effective when shooting outdoors in direct sunlight, where the natural contrast between bright sky and shaded foreground can exceed the comfortable range of many camera sensors. Unlike diffusion or fog filters, the Low Contrast filter preserves overall image sharpness and does not introduce a generalized haze.

The Grade 3 designation places this filter at a moderate-to-strong level of contrast reduction within Tiffen's Low Contrast range, making it best suited for situations with pronounced contrast that needs significant taming. Because the effect is optical and applied at capture, it cannot be reversed in post-production, so it is best used when the lighting conditions clearly call for it. The filter threads onto any lens with a 49mm front diameter and adds negligible weight or bulk, making it easy to carry as part of a compact filter kit for location work.
