This guide walks every step in order.

Before You Start: Parts and Workspace

A complete build needs seven core parts: CPU, motherboard, memory, storage, power supply, case, and a CPU cooler (many CPUs no longer include one). A graphics card is the eighth if you game or edit. This walkthrough uses a current AMD AM5 platform — an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D on an MSI B650 Gaming Plus WiFi — but every step is identical on Intel apart from the socket-loading details. Step 1: Seat the CPU

Open the motherboard's socket lever, then match the gold triangle on the CPU's corner to the triangle printed on the socket. The chip drops in under its own weight — if it needs force, the orientation is wrong. AM5 and modern Intel sockets keep their fragile pins in the socket itself, so hold the CPU by its edges, lower it straight down, and close the retention lever until it latches. The lever takes firm pressure; the crunchy feeling is normal.

Step 2: Click In the RAM

With two sticks — like this Corsair Vengeance 32GB DDR5-6000 kit — use slots two and four counting from the CPU; the manual's memory page confirms which pair your board prefers. Open the slot latches, line the stick's notch up with the key in the slot, and press both ends down until each latch snaps closed. DDR5 needs a surprising amount of even pressure. Step 3: Mount the M.2 SSD

The M.2 slot sits under a small heatsink plate on most boards — unscrew it, slide the SSD (here a Crucial P310 2TB Gen4) into the slot at an angle, press it flat, and secure the far end with the toolless latch or tiny screw. Peel the plastic film off the heatsink's thermal pad before screwing it back down. That's the entire storage install; no cables exist for M.2 drives.

Step 4: Install the CPU Cooler

A tower air cooler such as the Cooler Master Hyper 212 is the forgiving first-build choice. If the cold plate ships with pre-applied paste, use it; otherwise squeeze a pea-sized dot in the CPU's center — spreading happens under clamping pressure. Mount the bracket per the leaflet, tighten screws in an X pattern a few turns at a time, and plug the fan into the header labeled CPU_FAN. A cooler plugged into the wrong header can leave the board refusing to boot by design.

Step 5: Bench-Test Before the Case (Optional, Recommended)

Experienced builders POST the board once before it goes in the case: board on its box, power supply connected, monitor on the motherboard's HDMI (or the GPU held in the slot), then bridge the two power-switch pins with a screwdriver tip. Thirty seconds of assembly-checking here beats disassembling a finished case build to find one unseated RAM stick.

Step 6: Prepare the Case

Lay the case — here an NZXT H510 — on its side with both panels off. Check that motherboard standoffs are installed in the holes matching your board's ATX pattern (most ship pre-installed; a mismatched extra standoff can short the board). Modern boards have the I/O shield integrated, so there's usually no separate plate to snap in — one classic first-build mistake retired.

Step 7: Mount the Motherboard

Lower the assembled board in at an angle so the rear I/O lines up with the case cutout, sit it on the standoffs, and start every screw loosely before tightening any — snug, not torqued. The board should never flex.

Step 8: Install the Power Supply and Main Cables

Before routing, connect just three cable runs: the 24-pin to the board, the 8-pin EPS to the top-left CPU header, and set aside the PCIe cables for the graphics card. Step 9: Install the Graphics Card

Remove the two slot covers behind the top PCIe x16 slot, open the slot's latch, and press the card — e.g. an MSI RTX 4070 Ventus — straight in until the latch clicks. Screw the bracket to the case, then connect the PCIe power leads: dedicated runs from the PSU, not a single daisy-chained cable, for cards with two connectors. If the card sags visibly, the bundled support bracket exists for a reason.

Step 10: Front-Panel Connectors and Fans

The fiddliest five minutes: the case's power switch, reset, and LED leads land on a small pin block in the board's bottom-right corner, mapped in a diagram on the manual's last pages — the power switch pair is the only one that must be right, and it has no polarity. USB-C, USB 3.0, and front audio each have keyed connectors that only fit their own headers. Case fans go to SYS_FAN headers, or to a hub if the case includes one.

Step 11: Cable Management and Close-Up

Flip the case and spend ten minutes behind the tray: bundle slack with the case's velcro straps, keep the CPU area clear for airflow, and confirm every connector got fully seated as you tidy. Perfection is cosmetic; airflow and seated connectors are what matter. Panels back on.

Step 12: First Boot and Setup

Connect the monitor to the graphics card (not the motherboard), plug in power and a keyboard, flip the PSU switch, and press the case power button. First boots on DDR5 systems can take a minute or more of black screen while the board trains memory — don't panic and don't power off. When the firmware screen appears, enable the RAM's EXPO/XMP profile (our XMP/EXPO guide covers the safe way), set boot order to your USB installer, and install Windows. If nothing appears after a few minutes, reseat RAM first — it's the cause of most silent first boots.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a first PC build take?

Plan for two to four hours at a relaxed pace, most of it reading the motherboard manual and routing cables. Experienced builders finish in about an hour.

Do I need an anti-static wrist strap?

A strap is cheap insurance but not mandatory. Touching the case's bare metal or the PSU shell before handling components, and working off carpet, addresses the realistic risk.

What order should I install parts in?

CPU, RAM, and M.2 onto the motherboard first, cooler next, then board into case, PSU, graphics card, and finally front-panel wiring. Building onto the board outside the case gives you room to work.

Why won't my new build display anything?

The usual suspects, in order: monitor plugged into the motherboard instead of the graphics card, RAM not fully clicked in, the 8-pin CPU power cable forgotten, or a DDR5 board still memory-training — give it a full minute before touching anything.
