Microsoft R18-06412 Windows Server 2022 Device CAL

The Microsoft Windows Server 2022 Device CAL (Client Access License) is a required licensing component for any device that connects to a Windows Server Standard or Datacenter environment. Unlike the server operating system license itself, which covers the right to run the server software, CALs authorize individual devices to access server services and resources. This Device CAL model is designed for scenarios where a single device — such as a shared workstation, point-of-sale terminal, or lab computer — is used by multiple people, making it more cost-effective than purchasing individual User CALs for every person who sits at that machine.

A key advantage of the Windows Server 2022 Device CAL is its backward compatibility: it grants access not only to Windows Server 2022 but also to Windows Server 2019 and all prior versions. This simplifies license management for organizations running mixed server environments during migration periods. As a genuine Microsoft license, it ensures full compliance with Microsoft's licensing terms, maintaining eligibility for support and avoiding audit risks. Organizations should assess their access patterns carefully — if employees typically access servers from multiple personal devices, User CALs may be the more economical choice.
