Overview

The SanDisk iXpand Flash Drive Luxe is a 128GB dual-connector USB drive designed to solve a specific problem: moving files between Apple's Lightning ecosystem and the USB-C world without adapters, cables, or cloud uploads. One end carries a Lightning connector for iPhones and older iPads; the other carries USB-C for modern iPads, Macs, Android devices, and PCs. The USB 3.0 interface delivers up to 90MB/s sequential read and 45MB/s write through the USB-C connector — fast enough to transfer a 4GB file in under 90 seconds on the read side. Through Lightning, however, the bus speed drops to USB 2.0 levels, so expect roughly 35–40MB/s in practice regardless of the drive's rated capability. The 128GB capacity provides enough room for substantial photo libraries and video files, and the all-metal casing gives it a solid feel while passively dissipating heat during sustained transfers.

This drive is built for photographers, travelers, and professionals who need to offload iPhone photos and videos to other devices without relying on iCloud or a laptop intermediary. The iXpand Drive app on iOS provides automatic backup when connected — it detects new photos and videos and copies them to the drive — plus a software-encrypted vault for sensitive files. On Mac and Windows, SanDisk SecureAccess provides the same password-protection functionality. The form factor is compact enough for a keychain, and the swivel design protects whichever connector is not in use. For workflows that demand moving files between Apple and non-Apple devices regularly — handing off event photos, sharing video edits, or maintaining offline backups — the iXpand Luxe is one of the few drives that bridges both ecosystems in a single pocketable device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The dual-connector design — Lightning on one end, USB-C on the other — lets you plug into an iPhone, copy files to the drive, then plug the USB-C end into a compatible Android phone to transfer. No computer or cloud service required. The Android device must support USB OTG.
SanDisk rates the drive at up to 90MB/s read and 45MB/s write via USB 3.0. However, Lightning's bus maxes out at roughly USB 2.0 speeds (~35–40MB/s in practice), so transfers to and from iPhones will be bottlenecked by the Lightning interface, not the drive itself. You will see the full speed advantage only through the USB-C connector on a USB 3.0 host.
You must configure automatic backup within the iXpand Drive app settings on iOS. Once enabled, the app backs up new photos and videos each time you plug in the drive and open the app. It does not run as a true background service — you need to launch the app after connecting.
Yes. USB-C iPads recognize the drive as an external storage device through the Files app natively, and the iXpand Drive app is also compatible for backup and password-protection features.
It is software-based, managed through the iXpand Drive app on iOS or SanDisk SecureAccess on Windows and Mac. Files are encrypted in a password-protected vault on the drive, but there is no hardware encryption controller — performance during encrypted file access depends on the host device's processing power.
