Overview

The Seagate SkyHawk ST8000VX0022 is an 8TB, 3.5-inch hard drive built specifically for the write-intensive, always-on demands of AI-enabled surveillance systems. Its 256MB cache and 180TB/year sustained workload rating are the two numbers that define its capability tier: 180TB/year translates to approximately 493GB of sustained daily writes, enough to support 64 simultaneously recording HD cameras without frame loss. The SATA 6Gb/s interface delivers up to 600MB/s theoretical throughput — sufficient for the sequential write patterns that dominate surveillance workloads. The ImagePerfect AI firmware is designed specifically to maintain image integrity under the random read bursts generated by AI video analytics processes running concurrently with active recording.

The ST8000VX0022 is built for dedicated surveillance enclosures — NVR systems, DVR units, and purpose-built server racks running 24×7 in commercial or enterprise security installations. For small-to-medium deployments of 8–32 cameras with moderate retention windows, a single drive provides adequate capacity. Larger installations requiring 60+ day retention at 4K resolution will require RAID arrays or multiple drive bays. SkyHawk Health Management firmware adds a layer of operational intelligence that separates this drive from generic high-capacity alternatives — proactive error prediction reduces the risk of unplanned outages in installations where surveillance continuity is operationally critical. The three-year Rescue Data Recovery Services inclusion is a practical risk mitigation measure for deployments where footage has legal or compliance value.

Frequently Asked Questions

The SkyHawk 8TB is rated for 180TB/year of sustained workload — equivalent to 64 simultaneously streaming HD cameras running 24×7. Standard desktop drives are rated for 55TB/year or less; exceeding that rating accelerates wear and increases the probability of data errors under continuous write loads.
The drive uses a SATA 6Gb/s interface, which is backward-compatible with SATA 3Gb/s and SATA 1.5Gb/s hosts. It fits any standard 3.5-inch SATA bay found in NVR, DVR, and server enclosures designed for surveillance storage.
The ST8000VX0022 carries a 256MB cache buffer. Larger cache matters in surveillance because incoming streams from multiple cameras create bursty, concurrent write requests — a larger buffer absorbs those bursts and smooths them into sequential writes, reducing the risk of frame drops under peak load.
Yes — Seagate's SkyHawk Health Management firmware provides proactive monitoring with error prediction and alerting. This allows NVR software that supports SkyHawk Health Management to flag potential failure before data loss occurs, rather than discovering a problem after the fact.
The drive ships with a three-year limited warranty that includes three years of in-house Rescue Data Recovery Services. This covers recovery from accidental deletion, corruption, and some hardware failure scenarios — a meaningful safety net for always-on surveillance installations.
