Sony LTO200G/3 LTO2 Ultrium Data Tape

The Sony LTO200G/3 is a second-generation LTO Ultrium data tape cartridge with 200GB native and 400GB (2:1 compressed) capacity. In the context of LTO tape technology, LTO-2 represented a doubling of the original LTO-1 native capacity and a step to 35 MB/s native transfer rates — specifications that enabled reliable overnight backup of mid-sized enterprise datasets when the format was current. The A3MP (Advanced Alloy Armored Metal Particle) coating is Sony's differentiator in this media segment: the proprietary formulation improves magnetic output signal, environmental stress resistance, and head-to-tape tracking stability compared to standard metal particle designs. The ultrasonically welded shell construction removes the mechanical failure mode of adhesive-bonded housings over thermal cycling.

This cartridge belongs in two scenarios: maintaining an existing LTO-2 or LTO-3 tape library that still serves an active backup rotation, or providing archival media for a facility that stores historical LTO-2 cartridge sets and needs additional stock. It is not a recommendation for new infrastructure builds — the LTO roadmap has advanced to LTO-9 (18TB native), and the cost-per-terabyte advantage of newer generations is substantial. However, for IT environments where LTO-2 drives remain operational and a complete media refresh to newer LTO generations hasn't been prioritized, Sony's LTO-2 cartridges remain a reliable, specification-compliant choice with a track record for media durability and data integrity under real-world environmental conditions.
