Western Digital WD101EFBX Red Plus - 10TB NAS Hard Drive

The Western Digital WD Red Plus 10TB is a purpose-built NAS hard drive designed for the demands of small to medium-sized business storage environments. Unlike desktop drives repurposed for NAS use, the Red Plus features Western Digital's NASware firmware — a set of optimizations that address the specific challenges of operating in multi-drive enclosures. These include improved error recovery controls that prevent drives from being dropped from RAID arrays during rebuilds, vibration compensation for systems running multiple spinning drives in close proximity, and power management tuned for 24/7 operation rather than desktop sleep/wake cycles.

At 7200 RPM with a 256MB cache, the WD Red Plus 10TB delivers meaningfully faster throughput than its 5400 RPM counterparts, which matters during RAID rebuilds, large file transfers, and simultaneous multi-user access. The drive connects via standard SATA 6 Gb/s and fits any 3.5-inch bay, maintaining broad compatibility across popular NAS platforms from Synology, QNAP, and others. With support for up to 8-bay systems and a workload rate of 180 TB per year, it is positioned squarely at users who need dependable, high-capacity storage that can handle continuous operation without compromising data integrity. For NAS builders who value proven reliability and consistent mechanical drive performance, the Red Plus remains a strong foundation.
