Western Digital WUH721818ALE6L4 Ultrastar 18TB SATA HDD

The Western Digital Ultrastar DC HC550 WUH721818ALE6L4 is an 18TB enterprise hard drive built for data center environments where density, endurance, and predictable performance matter more than peak burst speed. The drive achieves its 18TB capacity through a combination of Energy-Assisted Magnetic Recording (EAMR) and a nine-platter helium-sealed design — two technologies that work together to push areal density beyond what conventional air-filled CMR drives can deliver. The Triple Stage Actuator adds a third layer of positioning control to the read/write head, improving accuracy across the densely packed track layout and reducing latency variance under sustained workloads.

The practical target for this drive is the operator running a NAS array, backup appliance, or cold-storage archive that needs maximum capacity per bay with a workload rating high enough for continuous operation. The 550TB/year rating is the key spec for that use case — it means the drive is warranted for roughly 1.5TB of data movement per day, far beyond what desktop-class drives are designed to handle. The SATA 6Gb/s interface keeps it broadly compatible without requiring SAS HBAs or specialized controllers, and the 3.5-inch form factor ensures it slots into any standard server chassis or NAS enclosure without modification. For organizations consolidating storage or filling high-capacity shelves, the HC550 represents one of the more cost-effective paths to petabyte-scale SATA storage.
